What Is a Poker Satellite?
A satellite is a low buy-in qualifying tournament that pays out seats into a bigger event instead of cash. Win one, and a small stake turns into a full-price entry — sometimes worth many times what you put in — to a Main Event, a high roller, or a major online series.
How Live Poker Satellites Work
At a live festival, satellites usually run in the days and hours before the Main Event. The format is normally winner-take-all or top-heavy: however many entries it takes to cover one Main Event seat is however many places get paid, so min-cashing a satellite is rarely the goal — the seat is. Series like the WSOP, WSOP Circuit, APT and Triton Poker Series all run satellites alongside their bigger-buy-in events for exactly this reason.
How Online Poker Satellites Work
Online, satellites are often structured as a ladder: players can start at a tiny buy-in — sometimes just a few dollars — and step up through several qualifying rounds before landing a full package, which can include the Main Event entry plus accommodation. Sites like GGPoker, PokerStars and CoinPoker run these year-round for their own festivals and for partner live series overseas.
Why Satellites Matter
Most players can’t justify a direct $1,700, $5,000 or $10,000 buy-in. Satellites are the standard route in for recreational and grinding players alike, and they’re often the single most efficient way to turn a small bankroll into a shot at a massive field. We track the satellite routes worth knowing about below.
